If you want to work in the state of Texas as an electrician, there is no getting around the fact that you must be licensed. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation oversees the licensing process, including the issuance of new licenses and the renewal of existing licenses.
Licensed Electricians Go Through a Number of Steps
In order to be a fully licensed electrician in Texas, there are a number of steps that you must follow. This process requires significant time and effort on the part of the applicant, so you can have peace of mind knowing that the licensed electrician you hire has the knowledge and experience to keep your home safe. First of all, there are four levels that an electrician can achieve:
- Apprentice Electrician
- Residential Wireman
- Journeyman Electrician
- Master Electrician
To be an Apprentice Electrician, one must be at least 16 years old, and they need to have the appropriate training and submit the right forms. Once an apprentice can demonstrate a certain level of competence and experience, they can move on to apply for Residential Wireman status.
To get a Residential Wireman license, an electrician is required to have at least 4,000 hours of experience under a Master Electrician. This training has to be fully documented and signed for by a Master Electrician or a licensed Residential Wireman. The final step to getting a Residential Wireman license is to pass an exam.
In order to become a Journeyman Electrician, an applicant needs to have 7,000 documented hours under a Master Electrician. After completing that step, they qualify to take the Journeyman Electrician certification test. However, applicants must complete a total of 8,000 hours of on-the-job training before they can become fully licensed as a Journeyman Electrician.
Master Electricians represent the top of the electrical industry. In Texas, an electrician must have 12,000 hours of on-the-job training to apply for their Master Electrician License. Like each level before, this licensing level also requires passing an exam and paying an application fee.
